Agrium Receives VPP Recertification
Agrium’s Conda Phosphate Operations (CPO) facility was recently presented with a Voluntary Protection Plan (VPP) recertification plaque on June 20th; marking the 20th consecutive year as an OHSA VPP Star Site. OSHA’s Area Director, Mr. David Kearns, presented the plaque to the site while noting the importance and honor of receiving such a classification.
The VPP program is a partnership with OSHA and industry (management and labor) that collaboratively strives to improve safety and health in the workplace. Only a small percentage of companies throughout the country are certified as a VPP Star Site which is “Recognition for employers and employees who demonstrate exemplary achievement in the prevention and control of occupational safety and health hazards the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of their safety and health management system1”.
Aside from the recognition itself, the statistical evidence for VPP’s success is impressive. According to OSHA, the average VPP worksite has a Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART) case rate of 52 percent below the average for its industry. CPO is no exception, as the site continues to showcase and improve upon an impressive safety culture. “We are a site comprised of tremendous men and women who genuinely believe (and act) that no one should get hurt while working at our site. We have a great team and this recognition is confirmation of their efforts” noted Brandon Green, the site’s EHS&S Manager.
